Thinking about Tamora Pierce and the Margaret A. Edwards Award

30 Jan

I was surprised and thrilled when they announced that Tamora Pierce was the 2013 Margaret A. Edwards Award winner. The award is for lifetime achievement in writing for young adults. Pierce has a whole host of fantasy with strong female protagonists, compelling story lines and a fantasy world, Tortall, I have loved from the first book I read.

In the Fall of 2011, I went on a Tamora Pierce binge. , I finished the Beka Cooper series

and remembered how much I’d enjoyed earlier things she’d written. These brought back some very fond reading memories, so beginning in January 2012,  I reread The Song of the Lioness Quartet.

These are the original covers of the books I read in the 80’s.  They have been updated since, but this is how I think about them. Alanna was really the first strong female character  I read in YA lit.

I followed that series with the Protector of the Small Quartet. Here are the new covers for this series.

I love Kel’s independent spirit and desire to stand up for the underdog.  She and I had a lot in common.

Then I took on the Immortals series, which I had not read before, focusing on a character, Daine, who had appeared in earlier books. This one was much more magic focused, but it certainly appealed to the basset hound rescuer in me.

Finally, I ended my binge with the Trickster books, which tell about the adventures of Alanna’s daughter, Aly.

And there I stopped.I haven;t read The Circle of Magic Books yet.  Maybe that’ll be part of my 2013 experience.
