Knit Your Bit – Deborah Hopkinson & the Rose City Yarn crawl

3 Mar

Yup, you read it right. Rose City yarn Crawl weekend. It’s just like a pub crawl, but it’s for knitters. The goal is to visit all 19 stores in 4 days. I have 2 left to do today, but yesterday’s highlight was this

Yes, Deborah Hopkinson, local author & recent winner of a  Robert F. Sibert Honor Award for non-fiction and finalists for the YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults for Titanic: Voices from the Disaster, was at All About Yarn in Tigard singing books. I LOVE when 2 of my 3 passion unite!

Knit Your Bit is a fictionalized account of a real  “Knit In” that occurred in Central Park during the First World War.

Mikey’s dad has gone off to war. His sister , Ellie, is knitting for soldiers, but Mikey thinks knitting is for girls, even though Ellie show him photos of firemen knitting and sheep that President Wilson is allowing to graze on the White House lawn. (these photos and others are reproduced on the endpapers) When Mikey’s teacher announces that their entire class will learn to knit he grains.  But a little boy/girl competition spices things up.  Mikey doesn’t win the Central Park knit in, but he learns about making a  contribution to a community effort and trying something new. Hopkinson’s notes at the end explain about the WWI knitting effort and offers suggestions & websites on how readers can knit for charity.

I like  Steven Guarnaccia’s  bright and cheery cartoon illustrations.  They focus our attention on the characters and evoke the time period right down to the boys’ center-parted hair.

All in all, this is a wonderful work of historical fiction that will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers.

I think you should start a knitting class in your free time (ha ha), because I don’t know how to knit, but wish I did.
