Happy Harvest Season…

2 Oct

…let the rot and decay begin! You should begin by reading Rotten Pumpkin: A Rotten Tale in 15 Voices by David M. Schwartz, with photos by Dwight Kuhn.

Unknown

Fantastically disgusting pictures  accompany this story of decomposition told so that science comes to life (and death). The rotting pumpkin does not travel alone on its journey or decay. With each turn of the page we are introduced to creatures and things that help along the way, from mice to yeast and penicillium. This is the coolest holiday book I’ve seen in a while, and it will get a big reaction from kids. There are ideas for further experiments in the back.

For the more sensitive reader, I suggest Sophie’s Squash by Pat Zietlow Miller.

Unknown-1

It is a gentler trip through decay and rebirth. Sophie’s mom buys a squash at the market, intending to cook it for dinner. Sophie takes one look at it and realizes its great potential as a playmate.

Unwilling to let her new friend become dinner, Sophie keeps it until it gets soft and an expert gives her some advice on how to keep it healthy. She buries her friend and waits through winter, and is thrilled to discover new friends who look just like their mom.

Finally, we have Let’s Go Nuts!: Seeds We Eat by April Pulley Sayre, a seed-themed companion to Rah, Rah Radishes and Go, Go, Grapes.

Bold photos and simple text make this an excellent into nuts, seeds and legumes. There is information at the back for those looking for some more meaty info (pun intended).

Enjoy!
