Trombone Shorty

1 Jun

One of  my favorite weekend activities is to listen to NPR’s Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me. This week’s show was a compilation of guest spots by musicians. One of the musician’s featured was Trombone Shorty. You can listen to him play Not My Job here.

With a name like Trombone Shorty, you might be picturing a wizened old jazz man. You’d be wrong because Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews was born in 1989.

Here he is playing at age 13.

You can learn more cool information about Trombone Shorty in the eponymous picture book Trombone Shorty  written by Andrews and beautifully illustrated by Bryan Collier.

We see him as a small boy who loved the trombone and got to play with Bo Didley.

We learn about how his love was encouraged and nurtured and how little Tony managed to turn his love into a career.

An excellent book for kids of all ages.

Publisher’s  summary: Hailing from the Tremé neighborhood in New Orleans, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews got his nickname by wielding a trombone twice as long as he was high. A prodigy, he was leading his own band by age six, and today this Grammy-nominated artist headlines the legendary New Orleans Jazz Fest.
Along with esteemed illustrator Bryan Collier, Andrews has created a lively picture book autobiography about how he followed his dream of becoming a musician, despite the odds, until he reached international stardom. Trombone Shorty is a celebration of the rich cultural history of New Orleans and the power of music.
