Until grade seven, I was able to walk home for lunch. It usually consisted of simple food like chicken noodle soup with bread strips or a grilled cheese.
Ah, grilled cheese. It is still comfort food.
In my first few years of teaching, when I lived near Huntsville, Ontario, we used to drive south on Highway 11 to the Pine Valley restaurant where we would order grilled cheese for dinner and apple crisp for dessert. It was the first time I had a grilled cheese on anything but store-bought white bread.
A few years ago, I was on the Sibert committee. One of the Honor Books we chose was Chef Roy Choi and the Street Food Remix. Because of this book, I started watching The Chef Show on Netflix, which stars Chef Roy Choi. In one episode, he makes a grilled cheese. His version was nothing like the ones I had grown up with or made myself. He used different cheeses and sourdough bread. It was a revelation – especially the sourdough bread. So, now, I make my grilled cheese exclusively with sourdough bread. If you don’t, you should give it a try.
P.S. You can see Chef Roy’s recipe here.
I feel you, girl! In college, one of the dining halls had “Grilled Cheese Wednesday”. I was KNOWN for being the person most excited about it. I LOVE Grilled Cheese! Now I’m sitting at my desk at 7:30 am craving one! Thanks for your delicious slice!
Sourdough makes the best grilled cheese! It’s always been my favorite comfort food too. I have to limit cheese and dairy now, so I rarely have one, but when I do, so delicious!
I could totally go for a good grilled cheese sandwich right now. I haven’t made one for myself in a couple of months.
Yum!! I love mixing up the cheeses. My go to right now is muenster and american.
Grilled cheese and some tomato soup for dunkin’. One of my favorite meals. Never tried it with sourdough bread. Will have to. Some white American and a slice of provolone make it just the gooey consistency I like.
I love grilled cheese, especially w/ Gouda! Add some tomato soup and it’s the perfect meal.
Comfort food! Thanks for the link— the gruyere and cheddar blend sounds like ambrosia. I am giving this a try and adding tomato soup…YUM!
Yum! I looked at the recipe. He uses butter on the bread, like I always have. Recently I’ve heard that mayo makes the bread nice and crisp. I’ll try it once to find out…
Oh, I love grilled cheese. It actually brings back memories from childhood. My mom would make my sister and I grilled cheese and vegetable soup. We had it about once a week throughout the winter months.
My comfort food is a tuna fish sandwich. I love it and eat it at least once a week.:) Thank you for sharing.
Oh yum. I welcome a post on grilled cheese. I’m jealous you found such a comforting topic. Got to remember the sourdough. I, too, love tuna fish, as the previous post shares. Thanks for this.
I just learned that if you butter both sides of each slice of bread, the whole sandwich becomes 10X better. I always love a good grilled cheese!
Oooo I might have to try this!
Definitely comfort food – especially if some one else cooks it for me!
I agree wholeheartedly! My husband prefers plain, store-bought white. I’m trying to bring my kids around to my way of thinking. My mom only ever made toasted cheese, which is not the same. I was an adult before I had grilled cheese and my life has been better since!
That is a mighty-fine looking grilled cheese sandwich you’ve pictured, and I’m definitely a fan of this comestible — though my wife accuses me of actually consuming boy cheeses (with mustard).
