Last year, when I did my taxes, the program I use informed me that it would be the last year my 2011 MacBook would be able to run their software. I set that news aside, but it has reared its ugly head. They weren’t joking.
This year’s software requires Mojave 10.14 and my ten-year old Mac lacks what it needs to upgrade. I am working on work arounds.
I could buy a new computer, one that can upload the software, but this Mac works just fine for what I do with it.
I tried uploading the software to my school computer, but it requires an administrator’s code, which I do not have. I will ask out tech person, who has an administrator’s code if she can help me out, but I suspect the answer is no.
I have downloaded paper copies of the forms I need. It’s super old school, but it might be easiest way to go.
Thank goodness I have another month to figure this out.
We were just talking about machines getting too old for updates. I had hung onto an old i-pod for a long time. Now I can’t do much on it as it will not take any of the last probably 6 years of updates. Haha.
All I can think of is built in obsolescence. We have had this problem with some of our computers as well. I eventually gave in and bought a new one. Having an extra month to get things done is nice.
I will get one eventually but I feel there is still lots of life in the computer I have.
I love my MacBook and have thought about writing an ode to it. Truly, it’s a mid 2012, the last one that the user can actually upgrade. The old ones are terrific. Paper will do just fine for taxes. There’s still life in that vintage machine.
That’s sort of how I am leaning. My taxes aren’t super complicated.
I’m in the same situation- I need to update my IOS and my computer is going to refuse. Luckily mine is a board-issue device so I just have to wait until September and request a new one (at least I hope that’s all I have to do!)
